Baby sleep problems are very common because your baby will not be aware of the relationship of night time and sleeping. So its a good idea to guide your baby by helping him or her to get used to several sleep associations like a song, rocking or maybe a blanket. A baby or a child's sleep problems need a parents guidance to help them through the problems that will be encountered from the first months up to their toddler stages.
Its good to be aware that baby sleep problems can be caused by lots of other conditions and problems, such as illness, blocked nose, soiled nappy, pain, hunger or thirst, environmental factors like noise and many other causes. Because your baby is not able to communicate verbally, you will have to be alert and on the ball, so that you can provide them with proper treatment straight away.
Baby's sleep patterns stages:
During the first three or four months after your pregnancy, a baby requires approximately 15 hours sleep in every 24 hrs. Baby sleep problems often happen during this period because your newborn will only stay asleep for about 4 hours at a time, which is normal. This means you should not expect to have uninterrupted sleep for the first 3 to 4 months and take this time to keep a eye on your baby in case of possible health problems developing.
Also be aware that baby sleep problems and uninterrupted sleep for parents may last for up to 6 months or more; however this can also vary from one baby to an other. Although, you can always help your child with these baby sleep problems by having a bedtime routine that you and your baby follow from the start.
Probably one of the most common of baby sleep problems is the resistance of the baby to actually go to sleep. Parents need to be aware of the signs that their baby is getting tired or ready to sleep. Babies at the age of six to eight weeks only sleep for about two hours at a time. Signs that point to your baby needing to sleep include rubbing the eyes, pulling their ears and other unique signs that your baby may show you. If you fail to spot these signs it can make your baby become overtired, causing him or her to have trouble falling asleep.
It is important to understand your baby's sleep patterns to get him or her to bed when they're sleepy. Once you have mastered these, you will know instinctively when to put him or her to bed and therefore avoiding any unnecessary baby sleep problems. Lots of parents just don't teach their baby about the difference between day and night. This is an important step in developing a proper bedtime routine that needs to be introduced as soon as possible after the pregnancy.
Baby sleep problems will hopefully not trouble both the baby and parents for a long time. By having an understanding of the the sleep patterns of your baby, and teaching them a bed time and allowing them to sleep on their own, this will take care of your child's sleep problems and they will sleep ok every night.
