RLS Symptoms : tips that may help.

If you have felt a sensation like tingling, cramping, or burning in your legs, usually during the night you could be experiencing RLS symptoms. These symptoms can vary from little to severe pain and discomfort. There are quite a few ways you can use to treat these symptoms. One is as simple as making sure you get more rest and trying to avoid the everyday problems that can cause restless leg syndrome. Definitely avoiding taking caffeine in large amounts and stopping drinking alcohol will help relieve the symptoms of RLS. There are different types of medicines and remedies you can take to also help the problem. If the condition persists or the pain gets worse, it would be recommended that you go and see a doctor for a more accurate diagnosis. Figures show that restless leg syndrome or RLS affects up to 5 percent of the population, world wide.

Over the counter medicines:

If you are suffering from or encountering RLS symptoms, you could try some of the over the counter medicines such as Advil, Aleve, or Tylenol. These drugs can help stop the moderate pain you are experiencing. However, make sure you only take the manufacturers recommended dosage to get the relief you desire. If you are having difficulty sleeping, there are lots of products that also include a sleep aid in the ingredients. Some sleep experts believe that RLS symptoms are caused by a low folate intake and low iron in the blood. So adding liver, eggs, beans or whole grain cereals will help to raise the levels of folate and iron. You could also add an iron supplement to your daily diet to give extra help and bring up the iron levels. It could also be wise to take a multi-vitamin to add more nutrients to your diet.

Prescription drugs:

There are currently two prescription drugs on the market that is FDA approved to treat restless leg syndrome or the RLS symptoms you are experiencing. One is Requip, it was the first drug to be approved by the FDA for RLS treatment. It is very effective in helping the moderate to severe pain you are dealing with. However, be aware that it can make you drowsy, so you should never drive or operate machinery while taking this particular drug. The second drug is Mirapex. This should be taken before bed time and will make you sleepy, but it should work well in helping to relieve the RLS symptoms you have been trying to deal with.

Some tips to help relieve your restless leg syndrome symptoms:

  • * Taking a warm bath before bedtime.
  • You could also put a heating pad on the problem area. This will help stop some of the discomfort.
  • Walking off the tension in your legs has worked with some sufferers.
  • Remembering to drink plenty of water will help to maintain a healthy diet.
  • Homeopathy is worth checking out. Rhus tox. (for rheumatism-related conditions) may be recommended or Causticum (for nervous system-related issues)
