Medication for restless leg syndrome: stimulating the dopamine receptors.

Restless leg syndrome is a sensorimotor neurological disorder that results in a great deal of discomfort in the legs with irresistible urges to move and stop the discomfort. This complaint manifests these sensations most commonly in the calf area, although it can occur anywhere on the legs. It may also make a person feel discomfort in the feet, arms or hands, and patients will also have trouble going to sleep.

It can classified into primary or familial, secondary and idiopathic categories. Obviously, such a condition requires treatment, and medications for restless legs syndrome must be taken to get relief.

However, it is also recommended for the patient to reduce or eliminate the following:

  • Coffee.
  • Tea.
  • Cola drinks.
  • Cocoa.
  • Reduce smoking.
  • Drinking alcohol.

The patient should also cut down or exclude all kinds of stimulants, including herbal teas as well as over the counter cold medicines, although exercising is also helpful. As for medications for restless leg syndrome, one can take Vitamin B to lessen the intensity and the duration of nightly leg cramps. This should be taken early in the day and in low dosage.

A few helpful tips:

The patient could also find another medication for restless leg syndrome called Good Night Rx to be helpful. The other drugs for restless leg syndrome include pharmacologic treatment including dopaminergic agents, opioids, benzodiazepines as well as anti-convalescents. The FDA has given its approval to dopamine agonist roinirole (Requip) as a front line drug for restless leg syndrome.

Because of restless leg syndrome, the patient's quality of life can be badly affected and hindered. It can also cause disruption to their sleep so that a medication for restless leg syndrome becomes necessary and the drug Requip is supposed to provide significant improvement in the symptoms.

According to Glaxo, the biggest drug company in Europe, the drug Requip works through the stimulation of dopamine receptors in the brain, and this drug has been given the green light by the U.S. FDA for use in moderate to severe cases of restless leg syndrome.

This medication for restless leg syndrome is already being used to treat patients who are suffering from Parkinson's disease. However, according to the results of clinical tests on the use of this medication for restless leg syndrome, there are some side effects of its use. These include nausea, excessive drowsiness, vomiting, dizziness and fatigue. Nevertheless, if used on a regular basis it will most certainly provide relief to patients, even in spite of the side effects.
